How to Select a Good Book

Do you like fiction or nonfiction?  Remember that a lot of the nonfiction books are used as a reference book for research.  Reading this type of book for pleasure may be boring unless you are interested in the topic and would like to learn more about it.  Other nonfiction books are written with the dramatic techniques of a novel, which makes for an entertaining as well as informative read.

2.   Look at the cover.  Does the dust jacket catch your eye?  Remember Š you canÕt always judge a book by its cover!

3.   Read the blurb on the back and the summary on the inside flap.  Does it catch your interest or pique your curiosity?

5.   Look at the books on display.  These are usually new books or books pulled to showcase a theme, such as Biographies, Sports, Banned Book Week, or Black History Month.

6.   What are your friends reading?  Ask them for recommendations.  Look for peer reviews on the noon announcements.

7.   Look for the same author of favorite books.

8.   Ask the librarian, who would be happy to make some suggestions.
