Surgical technologists work closely with
the surgeon, anesthesiologist, registered nurse, and other health
care professionals to deliver direct paitent care in the operating
room.
This
program teaches the necessary theory and clinical skills required
to work as a surgical technologist.
Students
will learn how to:
- Set up the operating room with surgical instruments
and equipment
- Wash and sterilize instruments
- Assemble, adjust, and check non-sterile equipment
to ensure it works properly
- Prepare patients for surgery
- Transport patients to operating room and help
position patients on the table
- Pass instruments and other supplies to surgeons
and assistants
- Hold retractors and cut sutures
- Gown & glove surgical team members.

Requirements
The
physical requirements are necessary to safely and accurately carry
out the surgical technologist
duties.
These include, but are not limited to:
- Full
range of motion of body joints. Ability to stoop,
bend, reach, pull and push.
- Fine
motor ability and visual acuity in order to accurately
manipulate needles and sutures finer than a human hair.
- Good
peripheral vision.
- Ability
to stand unassisted for eight continuous
hours during a surgical procedure.
- Ability
to move objects weighing up to 60 pounds
on a daily basis.
- Ability
to maintain composure & adapt under high
stress situations.
- Adequate
skin integrity, without the presence of
open, weeping lesions of the skin. No confirmed latex allergy.
Graduation
Students
must achieve the following in order to graduate:
- Maintain
a 90% attendance rate in both classroom
and clinical hours.
- Satisfactorily
perform a minimum of 80 surgical
cases in defined specialties in the surgical technologist role.
- Complete
all coursework with a grade of C- (74%)
or above.
- Take
the Program Assessment Exam (PAE) the month
before graduation.
- Meet
all financial obligations to Apollo Career Center.
- A
diploma is granted from Apollo Career Center upon
satisfactory completion of the program.
- Graduates
qualify to take the national certification exam
and attain the credentials of CST (Certified Surgical Technologist).
