Summer 2026

In my previous newsletter, I discussed Career Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) as one of the “secret ingredients” that contribute to the success of Career Technical Education. This time, I’d like to highlight another secret ingredient—one that may seem obvious, but is incredibly powerful: hands-on learning.

Students spend a significant portion of their day out of their seats and are actively engaged in their learning. At Apollo and career centers across Ohio, hands-on learning is woven into nearly every aspect of the educational experience.

Students learn about phlebotomy and then draw blood from a live patient. They study the operation of heavy equipment and then climb into a backhoe to operate it. They learn the principles of culinary arts and then work together to prepare and serve meals for dozens of guests.

This approach matters because students learn best when they can connect knowledge to action. They see the relevance of what they are learning, understand how it applies in the workplace, and gain confidence as they develop real-world skills.

Through community service projects, apprenticeships, and work options, students apply what they learn in the lab, solving real problems, using professional tools and equipment, and developing skills in authentic work environments. The result is high engagement, deep learning, and a clear connection between education and future careers.

As Apollo Career Center celebrates 50 years of serving our community, we reflect on how far we have come and look forward to what’s next.

Enjoy the summer,
